Engler Declares May as Older Americans Month in Michigan

Governor John Engler today announced that the month of May has been declared Older Americans Month in Michigan. "We are delighted during this month to pay tribute to Michigan's older adults," Engler said "it gives us an opportunity to recognize the skills, talents and contributions the growing senior population brings to our communities."
Many senior centers and other organizations serving older adults will host special events throughout Older Americans Month. America-A Community for All Ages. Michigan joins the nation in endorsing this year's federal theme:
Each year our older adults give back more than a million volunteer hours to their communities." "More than ever before, Michiganians are remaining active, often involving themselves in intergenerational activities for the benefit of all age groups. "This nation truly is a community for all ages," said Michigan Office of Services to the Aging Director, Lynn Alexander.
Some Older American Month activities include:
- May 9, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., 2002 Senior Health Expo, sponsored by the Wexford County Council on Aging at the Wex (Civic Center), 1320 N. Mitchell, Cadillac.
- May 16, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Senior Expo 2002, sponsored by Bay Area Senior Advocates, at the Holiday Inn, 615 E. Front St., Traverse City.
- Annual Senior Expo, sponsored by Region IV Area Agency on Aging and the Herald-Palladium, at the Mendel Center, 2755 E. Napier, Benton Harbor.thMay 17, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., 6
- May 23, 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Public Information Session offered by the Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency at the Best Western Dockside Waterfront Inn, 505 S. Huron, Mackinaw City.
- May 31, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Hispanic Senior Citizens Day sponsored by Latin American Services, at the Sheldon Complex, 121 Franklin, SE, Grand Rapids.

The tradition of setting aside the month of May in honor of the country's older Americans began in 1963. Since then, every U.S. President has commemorated it, with many state governors following suit to proclaim it as a state celebration as well.
