Governor John Engler today announced that the month of May has been declared Older Americans Month in Michigan. "We are delighted during this month to pay tribute to Michigan's older adults," Engler said "it gives us an opportunity to recognize the skills, talents and contributions the growing senior population brings to our communities."
Many senior centers and other organizations serving older adults will host special events throughout Older Americans Month. America-A Community for All Ages. Michigan joins the nation in endorsing this year's federal theme:
Each year our older adults give back more than a million volunteer hours to their communities." "More than ever before, Michiganians are remaining active, often involving themselves in intergenerational activities for the benefit of all age groups. "This nation truly is a community for all ages," said Michigan Office of Services to the Aging Director, Lynn Alexander.

The tradition of setting aside the month of May in honor of the country's older Americans began in 1963. Since then, every U.S. President has commemorated it, with many state governors following suit to proclaim it as a state celebration as well.
