The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) has immediately suspended the license to practice medicine of Louis E. May, M.D. The MDCH Bureau of Health Professions orders a summary suspension when it believes that the public's health, safety, and welfare warrant emergency action.
May's license was summarily suspended based on his prescribing controlled substances to patients without properly performing medical examinations, and prescribing controlled substances without a controlled substance license. May, 87, was also dispensing controlled substances from his home office without having a drug control license as required by the Michigan Public Health Code. Additionally, May's documentation in patient charts was routinely substandard, and he failed to keep appropriate inventories of controlled substances.
On March 22, 2010, the MDCH issued an order summarily suspending May's license pursuant to the Public Health Code.
