Michigan dept of Health and Human Services, partners provide food to 400 low-income families Food distribution event expanded to include low-income seniors

Four-hundred low-income families received food and essentials during an event today in Lansing sponsored by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services , Michigan STAR Touring and Riding Association, and Feed The Children.

This is the second consecutive year MDHHS has partnered with the international organizations to help those in need. This year, the food distribution event was expanded to include 40 low-income seniors, Ingham County MDHHS Director Louise Wing said.

"We really wanted to reach the underserved portion of our population," she said. "This event is a great opportunity to ensure families who are in need of support during these difficult economic times have enough to eat. It's one of the many ways we serve our state's vulnerable children, adults and families."

Volunteers from MDHHS, STAR Touring and Immanuel Community Reformed Church distributed a box of non-perishable food and a box of essentials to each family that was delivered in a Feed The Children semi truck. Ingham County MDHHS staff distributed vouchers for the event beforehand to area churches, food pantries, soup kitchens and other MDHHS community partners.

"We've become acutely aware of the issues facing our state, given the high unemployment rate and the number of people desperate for food," said Tom Neil, state director of the Michigan STAR Touring and Riding Association, an international family-oriented motorcycle organization whose national charity is Feed The Children.

"We ramped up our efforts to fund trucks in the hardest-hit areas and hope to continue to work with the Michigan Department of Human Services to put food on the tables of those most in need."

In order to reach those in need, it takes an incredibly strong partnership, said Tony Sellars, spokesman for Feed The Children.

"Our continuing relationship with STAR Touring is one of our strongest partnerships nationwide," he said. "The teamwork for the upcoming distributions will help to reach more children and families who have been adversely affect by the current economic downturn."

Pastor Richard K. Heusinkveld said he was happy to see so many people come together to help others in need.

"Everyone is struggling these days, but the only way to get through it is to work together one day at a time," said Heusinkveld, president of the Lansing STAR Touring chapter. "The Lansing STAR chapter members are always looking for the opportunity to reach out beyond themselves to better the lives of others."
