Joan Blount of Detroit and John Villa of Beverly Hills were honored as this year's Senior Citizens of the Year at a special ceremony during Older Michiganian's Day at the State Capitol in Lansing on June 15th.
Each year two Michigan citizens aged 60 and older are recognized for their volunteer contributions by the Michigan Office and Commission on Services to the Aging and Consumers Energy. Blount was named for her service contributions, while Villa was named in the leadership category.
At age 74, Joan Blount is a tireless champion for grandparents struggling with the financial, social, educational and legal issues surrounding grandparents raising grandchildren through a project spearheaded by Wayne State University. She also volunteers her time and energy to the Detroit Chapter of The Children's International Summer Village, a worldwide program working with youth in international villages that focuses on living in a peaceful, global society. As a volunteer parenting coach, she has also worked with men in the penal system, so they may understand their value as fathers, and how to rebuild their place in their children's lives.
John Villa is known as a strong community leader and at age 93, continues his meaningful advocacy for meeting community needs. Since Villa's retirement as a metallurgical engineer from General Electric, he has garnered funding for a gymnasium for disadvantaged youth in Southwest Detroit, a senior citizens center, and a homeless shelter. A dedicated ambassador for many causes, Villa serves on several boards and commissions, and has done so for some 20 years, rarely missing a meeting. Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development, Matrix Human Services, Leader Dogs for the Blind, and Adult Well-Being services are among a few of the organizations in which he has participated.
"Ms. Blount and Mr. Villa exemplify the true meaning and value of volunteerism, and are exemplary models of aging with purpose, dignity, and conviction," said Jerutha Kennedy, Commission Chairperson. "The Office and Commission on Services to the Aging and Consumers Energy are proud to honor the voluntary and selfless contributions of these individuals this year."
