Hertel Appointed as MDCH Senior Assistant for Policy and Planning

LANSING - The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) Director James K. Haveman is pleased to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Hertel to the position of Senior Assistant for Policy and Planning. Hertel will begin her new position Feb. 15, 2013.
"With her background and experience in health policy, Elizabeth will make an excellent addition to the MDCH team," said James K. Haveman, Director of the MDCH. "Healthcare in Michigan is at a very interesting time and we have many changes to prepare for. I'm confident that Elizabeth will be a true asset to MDCH as we move forward."
In this role, Hertel will be responsible for researching and analyzing state and federal policy issues impacting all MDCH programs, serve as a health policy resource on a broad variety of emerging issues, and work on a variety of special projects including providing support for the People Group which recently came under the direction of Director Haveman.
The People Group includes the departments of Community Health, Human Services, Civil Rights, and Education. The goal of the group is to create a productive dialogue between these departments to ensure Michigan children and families are being served in a collaborative, streamlined way.
Most recently, Hertel served as Senior Policy Advisor for the Michigan House of Representatives Republican Policy Office, where she was involved with legislation affecting health policy. Her responsibilities also included monitoring federal and state regulatory changes affecting state health programs and healthcare facilities. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration from Grand Valley State University in 2000.
