Three State of Michigan hospitals were named Top Performers on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. The Caro Center, Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital, and Walter Reuther Psychiatric Hospital, run by the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), were recognized for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for inpatient psychiatric services.
As a Top Performer, these hospitals are among 1,099 hospitals being recognized. This represents the top 33 percent of all Joint Commission-accredited hospitals reporting accountability measure performance data for 2012. This national recognition of three State of Michigan hospitals fits closely in line with Governor Rick Snyder’s commitment to improving mental health care services in Michigan through the work being done by the Mental Health and Wellness Commission and the MDCH.
“This achievement demonstrates each hospital’s, and more specifically, the State of Michigan’s commitment to assuring that evidence-based interventions are delivered in the right way and at the right time because it’s the right thing to do for our patients,” said James K. Haveman, Director of the MDCH. “We understand that what matters most to patients and their families is safe, effective care, which is why we are committed to ensuring positive outcomes for patients through utilizing evidence-based practices appropriately.”
Each hospital that was named as a Top Performer must achieve a cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures; achieve performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there are at least 30 denominator cases; and have at least one core measure set that has a composite rate of 95 percent or above and within that measure, set all applicable individual accountability measure have a performance rate of 95 percent or above. A 95 percent score means a hospital provided an evidence-based practice 95 times out of 100 opportunities. Each accountability measure represents an evidence-based practice.
