Help Babies Continue to Sleep Safely with Sleep Sack Exchange Program
July 20, 2015
For Immediate Release: July 20, 2015
HARRISON, Mich. -- Families in Clare County can trade in sleep sacks for a larger size to keep their growing babies sleeping safely under an innovative exchange program sponsored by the Clare County Baby Pantry.
Sleep sacks are a great way to help babies sleep more safely. While hospitals throughout the state routinely send new parents home with sleep sacks for their babies, Clare County is one of the first in Michigan to provide a way for parents to trade in outgrown sleep sacks for a larger size.
“Many families use the newborn sleep sacks we provide to area hospitals, but babies can soon outgrow the newborn size. Our exchange means they can trade for a larger size to help their babies to continue to sleep safely,” said Sue Foltz, a volunteer with the Clare County Baby Pantry. “We want to spread the word about the exchange to keep growing babies in Clare County sleeping safely.”
According to Foltz, the exchange is very easy and is open to all families with newborns – not just Baby Pantry clients. Parents simply come to the Clare County Baby Pantry at 211 W. Spruce St. in Harrison with their baby’s outgrown sleep sack and can trade it for a larger size.
The Clare County Baby Pantry is a non-profit organization created to provide assistance to needy families of Clare County who have children under the age of 5. Its sleep sack exchange was made possible by grants from the Clare County Community Foundation in 2014 and the Clare County Youth Council this year.
Tragically, a number of babies die in Michigan every year due to unsafe sleep practices. These deaths are 100 percent preventable. Michigan’s safe sleep initiative, coordinated by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, recommends sleep sacks as a safer alternative to blankets. Sleep sacks are available in many sizes to keep up with growing babies.
"While there are many causes that contribute to infant mortality, we also know that unsafe sleep deaths are entirely preventable," said Sue Moran, MDHHS deputy director for Population Health and Community Services. "When we partner together in support of initiatives like Clare County’s sleep sack exchange, we are one step closer to saving another life."
Infants sleep safely when they are placed alone on their backs in a crib or pack-n-play that is free of blankets and bumper pads.
For more information about the sleep sack exchange, call 989-539-7956. While the grants help to underwrite the cost of the sleep sacks, they do not cover all costs. Gifts are welcome. A $10 donation to the Clare County Baby Pantry will provide a sleep sack to one area baby.
