MDHHS Mobile App Awarded for Excellence in Public Health Communication
September 18, 2015
For Immediate Release: September 17, 2015
LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has been recognized nationally for its Michigan Prepares Emergency Plan App. The announcement comes during National Emergency Preparedness Month as Michigan joins federal, state and local governments to support individuals and families with their emergency preparedness efforts.
MDHHS received a Gold Award in the Social Media Outsourced Production category of the Awards for Excellence in Public Health Communications by the National Public Health Information Coalition. The Michigan Prepares Emergency Plan application allows the user to quickly create, store, and email an emergency plan - all from their mobile device, and was created by the MDHHS Bureau of EMS, Trauma and Preparedness.
“We are extremely proud that the National Public Health Information Coalition has recognized our work to help prepare families for emergencies that may occur in Michigan,” said MDHHS Director Nick Lyon. “An often overlooked aspect of public health is personal emergency preparedness. Everyone must plan ahead to keep themselves and their families healthy and safe, and the MI Prepares App is an excellent tool to help get started.”
The Michigan Prepares Emergency Plan app enables Michiganders to easily import emergency contacts from their phone into their emergency plan, designate meeting places, create an emergency kit, and have quick access to fact sheets and links to more information about common hazards in Michigan. Once the plan is complete, a printable version can be easily emailed to the user and their emergency contacts ensuring that the entire family can be prepared for an emergency, even when smartphones aren’t available.
NPHIC is the leading national organization for public health communication professionals. NPHIC’s ranks include public information officers, risk communicators and health educators at state, tribal and local health departments across the country. As the recognized voice of public health communication, NPHIC’s annual award program offers gold, silver and bronze awards in 17 public health communication categories.
An independent panel of judges at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication evaluate the submissions for the NPHIC awards. Grady College, at the University of Georgia, also judges the prestigious Peabody Awards.
The Michigan Prepares Emergency Plan App is available on both the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.
