MDHHS releases RFP for community coalitions focused on obesity reduction; Michigan continues focus on improved physical activity, healthy eating

For Immediate Release: September 30, 2015

LANSING, Mich. – To support the continued efforts of the Michigan Health and Wellness 4 x 4 Plan, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) recently released a Request for Proposals to assist community coalitions in implementing components that will further healthy lifestyles and help prevent obesity.

MDHHS will award up to eight $75,000 grants to applicants that demonstrate the greatest potential to promote the goals of the Michigan Health and Wellness 4 x 4 Plan. Programs will be funded from December 1, 2015, through September 30, 2016.

Community coalitions led by local health departments and other community organizations are encouraged to apply for funding to support healthy environments in communities, workplaces, parks and other public settings. Funding can be requested to lead a community in the implementation of either an evidenced-based healthy eating or physical activity strategy as outlined in the Request for Proposal.

Over the last three years, MDHHS has awarded more than $2 million in grant funds for the Michigan Health and Wellness 4 x 4 Plan programs. In that time, Michigan’s obesity ranking improved from 10th in the country to the 17th, while our obesity rates have remained fairly constant. While Michigan is making progress in preventing the increase of childhood and adult obesity rates, more efforts are needed to help change our communities into places that strongly support healthy eating and active living for all Michiganders.

Through the implementation of the Michigan Health and Wellness 4 x 4 Plan, Michigan is helping to improve health and wellness by creating healthier communities and empowering people to make healthier choices. Implementation requires a collaborative effort by state, tribal and local governments; businesses, industry and other private sector partners; schools and community organizations; as well as individuals and families.

Proposals are due by 3 p.m., Friday, October 9, 2015. All applications must be sent to Anita Powell at powella5@michigan.gov.
