MDHHS recognizes National Nurses Week
May 08, 2017
For Immediate Release: May 8, 2017
LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is joining partners nationwide to celebrate the 2017 National Nurses Week to highlight the role nurses play in promoting health and wellness.
This year’s theme, Nursing: the Balance of Mind, Body, and Spirit, is about recognizing the different ways nurses lead others to live healthier lives.
“Michigan’s registered nurses promote and help maintain the health of our residents through their hard work and dedication,” said Nick Lyon, director of the MDHHS. “Nurses work in a variety of settings, and it’s important we thank registered nurses everywhere for the care they provide to improve the quality of life for their patients, our families, and Michigan communities.”
National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6, and ends on May 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday. The purpose of the week-long celebration is to raise awareness around the importance of nursing and the role nurses have in supporting the health and wellness needs of Americans.
Today, there are more than 158,000 licensed nurses in Michigan. Nurses practice in a diverse array of healthcare and educational settings and are differentiated from other providers by their approach to patient care and training. Nurses perform independently and inter-professionally within their scope of practice, dependent upon their training and advanced or specialized credentials.
There are currently 69 schools in Michigan offering nursing programs. A list of Michigan Board of Nursing approved programs can be found on the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs website at www.michigan.gov/lara/0,4601,7-154-35299_63294_27529_27542-182977--,00.htm.
As part of National Nurses Week, the American Nurses Association is offering a webinar on preventing compassion fatigue, moral distress, and burnout. The webinar is available online at http://offers.nursingworld.org/nursesweekwebinar_double/.
