Mobile food pantry, Savor the Flavor are part of collaboration to emphasize good nutrition in Flint

LANSING, Mich. – Flint families may get nutritious food that can limit the effects of lead exposure during mobile food pantry hours set for February at locations throughout Flint. They also can find out more about the power of healthy eating and enjoy food samples at Savor the Flavor of Flint on Saturday.

The mobile food pantry and Savor the Flavor are both part of the collaborative efforts to emphasize to the Flint community the importance of good nutrition.

Savor the Flavor is Saturday, Jan. 27, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center, 3501 Lapeer Road in Flint. The event and parking are free. Savor the Flavor includes cooking demonstrations, free samples of 20 recipes, nutrition education and children’s activities. National recording artist Kierra Sheard is performing.

Sponsors are Michigan Fitness Foundation, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Bridges Communications Group, Inc., publisher of TheHUB Flint.

The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan in Flint and MDHHS also are announcing the upcoming schedule for mobile food pantry stops to distribute foods rich in calcium, vitamin C and iron.

Families in February will receive produce that includes apples, carrots, potatoes and onions.

The program is funded through the more than $300 million in state taxpayer funds that have been provided to help the residents of Flint. Food distribution sites remain open while supplies last. Upcoming dates are:

  • Thursday, Feb. 8, at noon – Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church, 1417 N. Stevenson St.
  • Friday, Feb. 9, at 9 a.m. – My Brother’s Keeper, 101 N. Grand Traverse St.
  • Saturday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m. – Flint Muslim Food Pantry, 4400 S. Saginaw St.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 13, at noon – Catholic Charities, 910 Chippewa St.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 14, at noon – Salem Lutheran Church, 2610 Martin Luther King Ave.
  • Thursday, Feb. 15, at noon – United Methodist Community Center, 4601 Clio Road.
  • Friday, Feb. 16, at noon – St. Luke’s NEW Life Center, 3115 Lawndale Ave.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. – Hispanic Tech Center, 2101 Lewis St.
  • Friday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. – My Brother’s Keeper, 101 N. Grand Traverse St.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 27, at noon – Catholic Charities, 910 Chippewa St.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 28, at noon – Richfield Academy, 3807 N. Center Road.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 28, at noon – Salem Lutheran Church, 2610 Martin Luther King Ave.
