LANSING, Mich. – Seat reservations are still available for the fourth annual Fostering Futures Scholarship Trust Fund Benefit to be held June 26 at Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids. For the first time, this year’s event will be held at lunchtime.

All proceeds help provide college access to hundreds of youth who have been in foster care.

The Michigan Department of Treasury’s Michigan Education Trust (MET) program and the Michigan Department of Health and Health and Human Services (MDHHS) are again teaming up to host the fundraiser, which begins with a silent auction at 11:30 a.m. Lunch and a program begins at noon, and the silent auction and raffle end at 1 p.m.

“With a lunchtime event downtown, we are hoping to attract a larger turnout from local businesses and be able to raise even more money to assist students who have experienced foster care in achieving their dreams of a post-secondary education,” said Robin Lott, executive director for MET. “During the 2017-18 academic year, 370 students at 50 different institutions are receiving support as a result of our Grand Rapids and Detroit fundraisers.”

The cost to attend the fundraiser is $75 per person or $500 for a table of eight. Purchase information is available at www.fosteringfutures-mi.com.

Raffle and auction items include a Michigan State University locker with football tickets and memorabilia; tickets to a Patti LaBelle concert, the Detroit Tigers and Grand Rapids Public Museum; a basket of University of Michigan goodies; an autographed Detroit Lions football; Red Wings memorabilia; a Coach wallet and a diamond necklace from Kesslers Diamonds.

Speakers will include NFL player Don Carey, who played for the Detroit Lions, and state Sen. Peter MacGregor of Rockford. The emcee is Eva Aguirre Cooper from WOOD TV8.

About 13,000 youth are in the Michigan foster care system administered by MDHHS. Many want to attend college, but less than 10 percent nationwide enroll after high school and less than 3 percent eventually earn a degree. The Fostering Futures Scholarship Trust Fund provides students who have experienced foster care and do not have adequate financial resources to attend college with a scholarship.

Since its inception, nearly 900 former foster youth have been able to attend college with financial support from Fostering Futures Scholarship.

Those unable to attend the event can make donations of any dollar amount to the Fostering Futures Scholarship Trust Fund by visiting www.fosteringfutures-mi.com. Fostering Futures Scholarship Trust Fund is a Section 170(c) organization so all contributions are eligible for an income tax deduction.

Seventy-five institutions participate with Fostering Futures and 16 Michigan colleges and universities have programs to assist former foster care students:  Delta College, Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Lansing Community College, Michigan State University, Mott Community College, Northwestern Michigan College, Saginaw Valley State University, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, University of Michigan-Flint, Washtenaw Community College, Wayne County Community College, Wayne State University and Western Michigan University.
