GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Youth exiting foster care in Michigan will have more financial support thanks to the generosity of more than 190 people who attended the fourth annual Fostering Futures Scholarship Event – Grand Rapids.
The lunchtime event today at Amway Grand Plaza Hotel raised $37,573 for Michigan’s Fostering Futures Scholarship Trust Fund. Attendees enjoyed food and music, placed bids on items in a silent auction and bought raffle tickets for prizes – all for the benefit of Michiganders who have been in foster care.
Keynote speaker Don Carey, who plays for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, emphasized that a person’s success isn’t determined by his or her size, socioeconomic status, hometown or school attended. “Don’t worry about what people say you can and can’t do,” Carey said.
The Michigan Education Trust, the state’s 529 college prepaid tuition program within the Michigan Department of Treasury, organizes the event in partnership with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
"The Grand Rapids community has been very supportive of the Fostering Futures Scholarship,” said Robin Lott, executive director of MET. “It’s important to give these young people the opportunity to go to college and pursue their dreams. Donations increase college access for youth exiting Michigan’s foster care system who may not have the same family support as others.”
Seventy percent of youth exiting foster care nationally say they want to go to college. But fewer than 10 percent who graduate from high school enroll in college, and fewer than 3 percent of foster youth graduate from college, according to Casey Family Programs.
Anyone who could not attend can make donations to the MET Charitable Tuition Program by visiting the Fostering Futures Scholarship donation pay-site. All contributions to the MET Charitable Tuition Program are eligible for a state income tax deduction.
The 2018 Fostering Futures Scholarship Event – Detroit is Sept. 20 at Waterview Loft at Port Detroit along the Detroit River. Look for more information soon about reserving a seat and other details about the Detroit event at http://www.fosteringfutures-mi.com/.
