In 2021, MiSP established the Detroit Stroke Coalition (DSC) and the Flint Stroke Coalition (FSC) to address disparities in stroke risk and care in Detroit and Flint.
Groups were formed by uniting the efforts of existing key partners who identified priorities for interventions based on community needs, resources, and surveillance data. The Coalitions include representation from local hospital stroke coordinators in both cities, emergency medical services (EMS) agencies and EMS medical control authorities (MCAs), as well as local health departments (LHDs), the American Heart Association (AHA), community health worker (CHW) organizations, universities, free medical clinics, K-12 school representatives, and community members.
The Coalitions have focused on developing data-driven, community-based interventions with the goal of integrating CHWs into local Stroke Systems of Care (SSoC), improving quality of care and education received by the communities they serve and reducing stroke risk.
