BE FAST Stroke Preparedness Training for Community Members

This MDHHS-developed training is designed to provide community-level training to the public on what a stroke is, how to recognize a stroke, and how to provide initial care. The emphasis is on early recognition and early access to treatment. It is recommended that the training be repeated at least every two years to help maintain the knowledge.

The training is approximately an hour long and includes five main segments:

  • What is a stroke? (includes discussion of two types of strokes) – 5 minutes
  • What are the risk factors? (includes a review of common risk factors for stroke) – 10 minutes
  • How can I recognize a stroke? – 15 minutes
  • Practice stroke scenarios (presented as either slide-based scenarios or video-based scenarios; choose one to three scenarios to fit the audience) – 5-7 minutes per scenario
  • Question-and-answer session – 10 minutes
