Division Activities
- Provide support and consultation to local health departments and other health care professionals
- Collect and analyze data on communicable diseases and share with the health care community
- Develop programs and strategies to control communicable diseases
- Engage in special studies related to the control of communicable diseases
- Provide liaison with CDC on issues related to communicable diseases
Surveillance and Infectious Disease Epidemiology (SIDE) Section
- Emergency Notification Network
- Surveillance
- Enhanced surveillance for infectious and unusual diseases
- Syndromic surveillance
- Surveillance systems used in Michigan, including the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS)
- Exploration of novel surveillance systems
- Preparedness and coordination for bioterrorism events and pandemic influenza
- State BT and Flu Preparedness Plans
- National Pharmaceutical Stockpile preparations
- Continuing education on biological agents
- Partnerships with law enforcement, emergency management and local public health in the surveillance for and response to incidents of intentional civilian exposure to infectious and hazardous agents (bioterrorism)
- Control, surveillance and education of:
- Respiratory infections, such as influenza and legionellosis
- Food-borne diseases, such as E.coli 0157:H7, salmonellosis, hepatitis A and viral gastroenteritis
- Diseases of the central nervous system, such as meningitis and encephalitis (meningococcal disease)
Healthcare-Acquired Infections, Body Art, Tuberculosis, Viral Hepatitis (HBTV) Section
- Viral Hepatitis Unit: Education, prevention and surveillance for Viral Hepatitis A, B and C
- Tuberculosis Unit: Education, prevention and surveillance for TB
- Surveillance for Healthcare-Associated & Resistant Pathogens (SHARP) Unit: Education, prevention and surveillance for antimicrobial-resistant and healthcare-associated infections (HAI)
- Body Art Unit: Body art education and facility licensure
- Infection Prevention Resource and Assessment Team (IPRAT): Infection prevention consultation, education, and on-site support to congregate settings
- Hepatitis C Disease Intervention Unit (DIS): Education and linkage to care for people living with hepatitis C
Zoonotic and Emerging Disease Section
- Control, surveillance and education on diseases transmitted by animals (zoonotic and vector-borne diseases,) such as West Nile Virus, Lyme disease, and rabies.
