Employment Success Story: Zachary Damon
Where do you work, and how long have you worked there?
"I am the Owner of Zach Damon Productions. Founded in 2012, Zach Damon Productions LLC is a media company based in Ann Arbor, MI. The company produces local television, radio, and web-based media content for distribution. I am also the Host and Producer of 'Ann Arbor Tonight' Ann Arbor's Late Night Variety Show."
What parts of your job do you enjoy the most?
"I enjoy every facet of my job, including project development, production, and distribution. However, working with an outstanding crew and being a part of a creative team to make a vision a reality is what I enjoy the most."
Can you share a moment when you felt proud of your contributions at work?
"A moment of pride was when our flagship production 'Ann Arbor Tonight' won its first award, the 2020 Philo Media Award for Best Interview/Talk Show."
Can you describe how your employment has improved your life outside of work?
"Employment has improved my life outside of work as I have used my professional skills to give back to the community. In my opinion, we all must give back to the social capital so resources for the future can remain available. Employment allows me to do that."
What advice would you give to people with disabilities looking for a job in their community?
"From my experience, the best advice is don't be afraid, have confidence in the abilities you possess, and above all speak up. Don't be afraid to "not know" as we all start somewhere. We all have a great gift that is the mind. If you want to know about a subject do your research and gain as much knowledge about that subject as you can to gain confidence. Surround yourself with those who see the best in you and the skills you have. If you want a job, use the resources you have to speak up and or ask those around you that you trust for help. I believe "Attitude is the real disability" from anything you dream."
What advice would you give to employers wanting to hire people with disabilities?
"In the words of Nike "Just do it". Accessibility improves productivity. Accessible workplaces have also been shown to outperform their peers, bringing in over twice the net income."
