At MDHHS we are a public health prevention program that does not offer crisis intervention or mental health services. If you need help now, call 911, go to the nearest emergency room, or call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline immediately.

Suicide is a serious public health concern that has far-reaching impacts and affects people of all ages. Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in both Michigan and the United States.1 The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services' (MDHHS) Preventing Suicide in Michigan Men program (PRiSMM), funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Comprehensive Suicide Prevention (CSP) program, was awarded supplemental funding for the creation of Michigan’s Nonfatal Suicide Dashboard.

The goal of the dashboard is to increase the use of syndromic surveillance data to help inform suicide prevention programming and interventions. The Nonfatal Suicide Dashboard provides access to data on nonfatal emergency department (ED) visits for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among Michigan residents, with specific filters available to examine vulnerable populations.

Please note the following definitions: Suicidal ideation is when someone has thoughts of ending their life, but does not act on those thoughts. A suicide attempt is when someone harms themselves with any intent to end their life, but it does not lead to death.

More information on the methodology for the dashboard can be found in the technical documentation tab located below the dashboard.
