Taking Part in the MICEP Project

The MICEP project measures arsenic, mercury, lead and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the blood and urine of those who are pregnant and live in certain areas of the state. This project will determine whether amounts of these chemicals are different during pregnancy compared to the United States and Michigan populations.

Taking part in MICEP is completely free. Residents in select areas will receive project information from their health care provider or be mailed an invitation.

To be eligible for the MICEP project, you must:

Be pregnant with a single baby.
Be 18 or older.
Live in the ZIP codes seen below.

To take part in MICEP, you must live in one of the eligible ZIP Codes as shown on the map below:

Are you interested in joining MICEP?

To see if you are eligible to participate in MICEP, scan the QR code or visit EH.Michigan.gov/MICEPSurvey. You can also call 844-464-7327 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, or email MDHHS-micep@michigan.gov.

Appointments are first-come, first-served. We will be in each area for a short time, so sign up now.

What will participants do?

After we ensure you are eligible, we will schedule your appointment at a site in your area. When you sign up for an appointment, the address will be provided.

You will then be asked to complete a survey. The survey will take 30–45-minutes. It will ask about ways you may have come into contact with PFAS, lead, mercury and arsenic.

At your appointment, you will be asked to give a small urine and blood sample. We will use these samples to measure the amount of certain chemicals in your blood and urine. If you are worried about these samples, you can ask your doctor for their advice. The lab appointment will take 30 minutes.

After completion of your survey and appointment, you will receive a $100 gift card as a thank you for your time and effort.

After you receive your results, you can also get an additional $50 gift card as a thank you for your time and effort by completing a short survey. This survey will help us understand how receiving your results impacted you.

Why take part in MICEP?

  • You will learn about the amount of lead, arsenic, mercury, and PFAS in your blood and/or urine.
  • You will get resources to help you understand your results and ways to reduce you and your baby's chemical exposure.
  • MICEP findings will help MDHHS improve educational materials and inform current and future programs aimed at reducing exposures during pregnancy to chemicals in the environment.

Will I get my results? What can the results tell me?

Yes. Your blood and urine results will be sent to you. Results will be sent either through [the mail/an online portal].

The results will tell you the amount of arsenic, mercury, lead or PFAS in your blood and urine when the samples were taken.

The lab results cannot:

  • Tell you where the chemicals in your blood and urine came from.
  • Tell you anything about chemicals MICEP did not measure.

MICEP results are not intended to diagnose current illness or predict future illness. Most people will not learn anything new about their health from their MICEP results.

What should I do if I am concerned about my exposure to chemicals now?

If you are concerned that you have been exposed to chemicals like lead, see your health care provider. Share your concerns with them and see if blood testing is right for you. Blood tests ordered by your health care provider can help connect you with more resources and services.

For resources on ways to reduce your exposure to the chemicals MICEP measures, like lead and PFAS, see the MICEP Resources Page.

How will MDHHS protect my data?

All samples and information will be stored securely at MDHHS. MDHHS will protect results to the fullest extent allowed by law. MDHHS will not give anyone the data we get from participants without their written permission.

Any reports or articles about the project will only talk about group results. These reports or articles will not include information that could identify participants, such as your name or contact information.
