Begin a Case
If you or your children currently receive public assistance or have received assistance in the past, you should already have a child support case. If you have not received a letter from the Office of Child Support within three months of your public assistance case opening, call 1-866-540-0008.
If you or your children have received public assistance in the past and a child support case was not opened, or is closed, you can apply for child support services. You may apply online with MiChildSupport, or you may print, complete and mail the IV-D Child Support Services Application/Referral - DHS-1201 form.
If you or your children have never received public assistance and you do not already have a case open, you can apply for child support services. You may apply online with MiChildSupport, or you may print, complete and mail the IV-D Child Support Services Application/Referral - DHS-1201 form.
Child Support Payments and Cash Assistance
If you start a case with the child support program and you're currently receiving cash assistance, you're required to assign your child support to the state as reimbursement for cash assistance.
Report Changes
Report any changes that may affect your child support case. For example:
- You or the other parent has a change of address.
- You or the other parent has a new phone number or new job.
- The number of children living with you changes.
- You have new information that may help locate the other parent.
- You are involved in other court actions, such as a divorce that involved child support payments.
Further information, including your rights as a participant, is available in the Understanding Child Support guide.
