MDCH Reminds Residents to Be Prepared as Winter Approaches, Announces Recipe Challenge Winners
November 14, 2013
LANSING – The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) Office of Public Health Preparedness (OPHP) has announced the winners of its Preparedness Kit Recipe Challenge held throughout the month of September to highlight National Preparedness Month. Michiganders are encouraged to review their own preparedness plans and supplies as winter approaches.
“We challenged the public to come up with their best recipe for a dish using only shelf stable ingredients, as knowing how to use those items can help make things easier during an emergency,” said Dr. Matthew Davis, Chief Medical Executive for the MDCH. “As the winter months approach, every Michigander should consider reviewing their preparedness plans and supplies. Having an extra supply of foods that doesn’t require cooking or refrigeration is an important part of being prepared.”
In the event of an emergency, residents may not have access to phones, internet, food or water, and electricity. Being prepared with resources that can protect your health and safety is crucial to protecting your health and that of your family. OPHP’s Michigan Prepares website contains informative, interactive, and user-friendly planning tools and tips to assist Michiganders with planning to stay healthy during emergencies.
The top three winning recipes were selected from each of two categories, no-cook and grill style. Grill style allowed for dishes to be warmed in a pan on an outdoor grill or camp stove so long as only shelf stable ingredients were used. The first place winner for the no-cook style recipe was “Protein Pops” submitted by Donna from Montrose, Mich. The winning grill-style recipe was “Gluten-Free Chicken Cheesy Stew,” submitted by Susan from St. Clair, Mich.
All winning recipes are highlighted on the Michigan Prepares website at www.michigan.gov/prepares, and the top recipes from each category are featured in a how-to cooking video on the MDCH YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/michigandch. The recipes will also be included in a preparedness e-cookbook with planning tips for Michigan residents.
