Training Resources and Information
The Bureau of Children’s Coordinated Health Policy and Supports provides all MichiCANS trainings, including:
- Transformational Collaborative Outcomes Management (TCOM) Orientation
- MichiCANS Overview
- Action Planning
- Supervisory Training
- MichiCANS Booster Training, and
- Supervisor Community of Practice Sessions
All MichiCANS related trainings will transition to the Michigan Capacity Building Center (CBC), through MDHHS effective April 1, 2025.
The CBC serves as a centralized training resource for staff working in behavioral health networks to access information, resources, and training related to Children’s Behavioral Health Services. It provides evidence-based, and evidence-informed behavioral health training on topics specific to the needs of children, youth, young adults and their families.

Action Planning
(3 hours) This training is required for clinical staff and clinical supervisors after successful completion of MichiCANS Certification (TCOM Orientation, MichiCANS Overview, and successful completion of the vignette-based assessment). A regular schedule of these trainings will start in January.

Supervisory Training
(3 hours) This training is required for supervisors who oversee staff who will be completing the MichiCANS. This training is taken after successful completion of MichiCANS Certification (TCOM Orientation, MichiCANS Overview, and successful completion of the vignette-based assessment) and Action Planning.

MichiCANS Annual Certification Booster Training
- Optional Booster Trainings are provided to assist with passing the annual recertification assessment. These sessions will be led by State of Michigan trainers and offered to those who (1) are already trained and (2) are requesting more opportunity for practice and application of the MichiCANS to prepare for recertification. The training will include use of vignettes and practice opportunities to ensure all participants achieve greater confidence in the use of the MichiCANS tools.
- Booster training objectives include:
- Increase understanding of the certification and recertification process.
- Increase accuracy and efficiency in the use of the MichiCANS reference guides and rating sheets.
- Enhance ability to communicate the youth/family’s story (needs/strengths)
- Increase confidence in the six communimetric principles.

Supervisor Community of Practice Meetings
- These meetings provide the opportunity for supervisors, throughout the state, to come together in a learning community with a focus on building practical skills to support meaningful use of the MichiCANS across the state and at the organizational level. The primary audience for this offering is clinical supervisors who directly oversee the clinical use of the MichiCANS. MichiCANS trainers are responsible for conducting these specific opportunities.
- Sessions will be held two times per month; however, there is no need to attend both sessions as monthly topics will be repeated.

Registering for training:
- Go to the Michigan Capacity Building Center (CBC) at MI CBC MichiCANS
- In the catalog, you will find a list of upcoming training sessions. To register for a session, click on "Go to Event" for the training you wish to attend. This page includes important details such as training dates/times, learning objectives, and trainer biographies.
- You can choose to register using an existing Zoom account or by providing an email address.

MichiCANS Certification Exams
Both TCOM Orientation and MichiCANS Overview must be completed before moving on to the MichiCANS certification course.
Successful completion of the MichiCANS certification course will allow you to be fully certified in the use of the MichiCANS. The certification course is hosted by the Praed Foundation. Below you will find directions on how to register for an account on the Praed Foundation TCOM Training Platform, enroll in the MichiCANS certification course, and access the MichiCANS certification course.
STEP 1: Creating your account
- If you do not have an account, please create one by following the instructions below. Please view this video for additional help in creating an account.
- Go to: www.TCOMtraining.com
- Fill out the required Fields (you can use your email address as your username)
- Country: United States of America
- Regional Designation: Michigan
- Agency: (type the name in and it will prepopulate as you type)
- Click “sign up now”
STEP 2: Enrolling in the MichiCANS certification course
- To enroll in the certification course, follow the directions below:
- Login to www.TCOMtraining.com
- Hover over TRAINING & navigate to BUNDLES in the drop-down box
- Click on the bundle named Michigan, Behavioral Health
- You will not need to provide a coupon code or payment method as this course is free for all eligible participants.
- Select the green ENROLL button. Once you have enrolled you will have access to the course for 1 year.
STEP 3: Accessing the course for certification
- Accessing your course:
- While in www.TCOMtraining.com hover over TRAINING
- Click on COURSES
- Click on the course Michigan CANS (MichiCANS)
- You may need to scroll to the bottom of the page and select the “Load More” option to find this option.
There are 84 steps listed in the certification course. Please know that the actual MichiCANS certification exam is listed under step 84. To access, click on the certification exam listed under step 84. Information listed in steps 1-83 is included as reference materials that can be used to help you prepare for the certification exam. Steps 1-83 are not required; however, you may find the information helpful.
