Employment Success Story: Rose Cuevas
Employment Success Story: Rose Cuevas
Where do you work, and how long have you worked there?
"I own Junction Party Store on Southwest Detroit. I have owned it since 2020."
What parts of your job do you enjoy the most?
"I love knowing I am helping the community members by providing the products and services they need. We are in a predominately Latinx community and in a food desert, and a lot of the customers can do a one-stop shop in our store and avoid longer, inaccessible trips to larger stores. What I love most is seeing the smiling faces of the customers when they realize that someone like them, a Spanish-speaking immigrant, can become a business owner and help his community."
Can you share a moment when you felt proud of your contributions at work?
"The day I opened my store as the owner. I created a new reality for myself, my family, and my community."
Can you describe how your employment has improved your life outside of work?
"I no longer wake up in the morning and dedicate 14 hours a day working for someone else who doesn't give me my accommodations for my disability and puts my health at risk. As a business owner, I can make a living, contribute to my community, and provide myself the breaks I need."
What advice would you give to people with disabilities looking for a job in their community?
"To not feel that anyone is doing them any favors. Know and love yourself and know what accommodations you need and ask for them."
What advice would you give to employers wanting to hire people with disabilities?
"Partner with agencies and organizations to educate themselves and staff to help them provide inclusive employment opportunities."
