Employment Success Story: Grant Schafer
Employment Success Story: Grant Schafer
Where do you work and how long have you worked there?
"I have been working as a Greeter at the Meijer in DeWitt for the past eight years."
What parts of your job do you enjoy the most?
"I am a people person, and I really enjoy interacting with new people and putting a smile on their faces."
Can you share a moment when you felt proud of your contributions at work?
"I was proud when I found out that a customer sent a letter to our store to let my boss know how professional I was during our interaction. I really appreciated receiving that letter!"
Can you describe how your employment has improved your life outside of work?
"My employment experience has made me become a better person."
What advice would you give to people with disabilities looking for a job in their community?
"My advice is if you need a reasonable accommodation, you should let your employer know upfront. If you need accommodation and don't ask for it, then your job will be difficult to do. It is best to be honest and tell your employer at the beginning of your employment."
What advice would you give to employers wanting to hire people with disabilities?
"My advice to employers is to be aware of ADA policies meant to accommodate employees. I suggest that employers make a reasonable effort to honor the accommodation. Take your time to work with people with disabilities and do all you can to make sure that your employee is successful."
