Peer Support
Peer Support
What is peer support?
The Family Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (Family Center) is the statewide affiliate of Parent to Parent (P2P) USA. The Family Center recognizes the value of connecting parents and family members who have children with special health care needs to one another for sharing, encouragement, and support. These peer-to-peer interactions are enriched by the shared joys and challenges of caring for a child who has special needs, and offer many important benefits, including:
- Reducing isolation and providing a sense of community.
- Learning from other families’ experiences.
- Discovering resources and information.
- Being empowered to navigate systems more effectively.
- Gaining hope and greater confidence to meet their child’s needs.
How can we help?
The Family Center strives to empower and support parents and family members in a variety of ways using a peer-to-peer model of support.
Michigan Family Support Network (FSN)
The Family Center established the Michigan Family Support Network (FSN) to carry out its work as the Michigan P2P affiliate, supporting families with special health care needs across the state.
Using the P2P support model as a guide, the FSN provides the following peer support programs to benefit Michigan families who have a child (of any age) with any special health care need (physical or mental health, developmental, or behavioral health conditions). Please read below to learn about how these programs can benefit you.

FSN Family Support Program
The Family Support Network (FSN) is an established network of experienced parents, caregivers, and family members of children with special health care needs from around the state. These individuals volunteer to provide support, information, and encouragement to fellow parents and family members with a child who has special health care needs.
Parents or family members requesting one-to-one support are matched with a Family Support Partner. We strive to match individuals with another caregiver who has the same role within the family (dad, stepparent, grandparent, etc.) or another parent who is caring for a child with the same or similar diagnosis and/or support needs. Note: In the case of a rare disease or condition, a match can sometimes be made using Parent to Parent’s nationwide network of support.
Our FSN Family Support Partners listen without judgement, offer support and encouragement, and can provide resources, information and ideas if needed.
- If you are a family member seeking one-to-one support, we invite you to call the CSHCS Family Phone Line at 800-359-3722 or email us at: CSHCSFC@michigan.gov. You will be connected to the FSN Project Coordinator to discuss the Family Support Program and your needs, in order to match you with a Family Support Partner.
- If you are an experienced parent or family member who is interested in volunteering to help support another family with special health care needs
Family Support Partners are required to take a two-hour online orientation session to learn about the program and their role. They are also invited to attend two (or more) online meetings for learning and connection with other Family Support Partners. As volunteers, Parent Support Partners always have the choice of whether to accept or decline any offered match. Please call the CSHCS Family Phone Line at 800-359-3722 or email us at CSHCSFC@michigan.gov to speak with our FSN Project Coordinator about being a part of this program.

FSN Online Support Groups
These parent-led virtual support groups are open to anyone who is a parent, caregiver, stepparent, foster parent, adoptive parent, kinship caregiver, or caregiver to a child with special health care needs by any circumstance.
These small, parent-led groups offer participants a welcoming, judgement-free safe space to share freely about the joys and challenges of raising a child with special health care needs. Expect to learn from others’ experiences, gather information and resources to benefit your family, and be supported and encouraged by others who can relate to your journey.
To learn more about FSN online support groups and how they could benefit you, or to find a group that works for your schedule, please contact the FSN Project Coordinator by calling the CSHCS Family Phone Line at 800-359-3722, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or email us at FCCSHCS@michigan.gov..
