Michigan Office of Services to the Aging Director, Lynn Alexander, will receive the Second Annual "Friend of the Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program" award on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at Burnham Brook Center, 200 W. Michigan Avenue, Suite 100, in Battle Creek. The awards ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
Outstanding Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) Volunteers and Volunteer Coordinators will also be recognized at the event. The Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program is funded by the Health Care Financing Administration and the Office of Services to the Aging and administered by Area Agencies on Aging Association of Michigan.
The Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program provides health benefits counseling and assistance services to older adult Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries and those on Medicare due to disabilities. Last year, 450 program counselors provided information and assistance on eligibility and coverage, enrollment, claims, post-enrollment issues and grievances and appeals related to Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, medigap and long term care insurance products. Program counselors handled over 35,300 cases in fiscal year 2000 and the MMAP hotline received calls from over 22,300 people.
"I am honored to have been chosen to receive this distinguished award," said Alexander. "The Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program is a valuable resource individuals and families in need and I am proud to support the program and its dedicated volunteers who have helped the program flourish."
