Steps to Help Prevent Youth Marijuana Use

Follow these tips to do your part.

Do your homework. Before you talk with your kids, learn all the different ways that marijuana can be used, and read the research on health effects and marijuana use disorder. If your child sees that you know what you’re talking about, they may be more likely to take your advice seriously.

Talk to your kids about marijuana use. Be open and nonjudgmental. If your child tells you they have used marijuana, don’t get angry; this will only shut down the conversation. Explain the dangers of marijuana for their brain development and mental health. Also point out that today’s marijuana is even more dangerous than in the past, due to higher concentrations of THC, especially in extracts and edibles.

Prepare them for peer pressure. What will they say if a friend offers them a joint or edible? Brainstorm possible answers so they’ll know what to say before it happens.

Be a good role model. Don’t use marijuana in your home, and don’t make light of marijuana use. Never drive after using marijuana, and never ride in a car with an impaired driver.

Watch for signs of marijuana use. These include:

  • Red or bloodshot eyes
  • Delayed reaction times
  • Mood swings
  • Laziness and tiredness
  • The presence of marijuana-related paraphernalia
  • Paranoia or anxiousness
  • Hunger or the “munchies”
