WIC Vendor Minimum Stock Requirements

A WIC Vendor must have, at a minimum, the following food items in stock at all times.

Fruits

Minimum quantity: $20 retail value or 15 pounds

  • Must carry 4 varieties.
  • At least 2 varieties must be fresh.
  • The other varieties may be fresh, frozen, or canned.
  • Any combination of fruits is allowed except those listed in the Food Guide as not allowed.
  • Varieties within the same fruit family count as one variety. For example, green and red grapes count only as grapes.
  • Lemons and limes count only as one variety.

Vegetables

Minimum quantity: $20 retail value or 15 pounds

  • Must carry 4 varieties.
  • At least 2 varieties must be fresh.
  • The other varieties may be fresh, frozen, or canned.
  • Any combination of vegetables is allowed except those listed in the Food Guide as not allowed.
  • Yams and sweet potatoes count toward the minimum stock requirement.
  • White potatoes, cilantro, and parsley are approved but do not count toward the minimum stock requirement.

Bread

Minimum quantity: 4 units

  • 1 unit equals any size package.
  • Must be WIC-approved whole wheat or whole grain bread or bread products.
  • This includes buns, bagels, English muffins, and pita.

Whole Grains

Minimum quantity: 4 units

  • 1 unit equals one 16-24 oz package.
  • Approved options include tortillas, pasta, oats, brown rice, and other whole grains.
  • See the Food Guide for allowable products.

Nut and Seed Butters

Minimum quantity: 4 units

  • 1 unit equals one 16-18 oz jar.
  • Includes peanut butter and other nut or seed butters.
  • Any brand and variety are allowed, including smooth, creamy, crunchy, or extra crunchy.

Beans, Lentils and Peas

Minimum quantity: 4 units

  • 1 unit equals one 16 oz bag or 4 cans/jars.
  • Any brand in 16 oz bags and/or 15-16 oz cans or jars.
  • Four cans or jars equal one bag of dry beans, lentils, or peas.

Fish

Minimum quantity: 12 units

  • 1 unit equals one package or can of any size.
  • Includes chunk light tuna, mackerel, sardines, and pink salmon.
  • Allowed package sizes range from 2.5 oz to 30 oz.

Cereal

Minimum quantity: 9 units

  • Must carry at least 3 varieties.
  • At least 1 variety must be whole grain.
  • 1 unit equals one box or bag of any size.
  • Only WIC-approved cereals and approved package sizes count toward minimum stock requirements.

64 oz Juice

Minimum quantity: 10 units

  • Must carry at least 2 flavors.
  • 1 unit equals one 64 oz bottle.
  • See the Food Guide for approved brands, types, and flavors.

Infant Fruits and Vegetables

Minimum quantity: 72 units

  • Must carry at least 1 fruit variety and 1 vegetable variety.
  • 1 unit equals any size tub or jar.
  • Examples include:
    • 4 oz glass jars
    • 4 oz 2-pack plastic tubs
    • 2 oz 2-pack plastic tubs
  • Single fruit and vegetable varieties are allowed.
  • Mixed fruit and vegetable combinations are also allowed.

Infant Cereal

Minimum quantity: 6 units

  • Must carry at least 2 varieties.
  • 1 unit equals one 8 oz box or container.
  • Examples include oatmeal, rice, multigrain, and whole wheat.
  • Products cannot contain added fruit, formula, DHA/ARA, or other non-cereal ingredients.

Formula

Minimum quantity: 12 units

  • 1 unit equals one can.
  • Allowed formulas include:
    • 12.4 oz Similac Advance powder
    • 12.6 oz Similac Gentle Comfort powder
    • 12.5 oz Similac Sensitive powder
    • 12.4 oz Similac Soy Isomil powder
  • 13 oz concentrate Similac Advance must be ordered upon request.

Eggs

Minimum quantity: 5 units

  • 1 unit equals one dozen eggs.
  • Must be white shell eggs.
  • Must be cage free.

Whole Milk

Minimum quantity: 4 units

  • 1 unit equals one full gallon.
  • Any brand of whole milk in full gallons is allowed.
  • Half gallons are approved but do not count toward minimum stock requirements.

Low-Fat Milk

Minimum quantity: 4 units

  • 1 unit equals one full gallon.
  • Includes 1%, 1/2%, and skim milk.
  • Milk must be sold in full gallons to count toward requirements.
  • Half gallons are approved but do not count toward minimum stock requirements.

Yogurt

Minimum quantity: 4 units

  • 1 unit equals 32 oz.
  • Whole milk yogurt is WIC-approved, but only low-fat and nonfat yogurt count toward minimum stock requirements.
  • Allowed package types include:
    • 32 oz tubs
    • 4 oz 4-packs
    • 4 oz 8-packs
    • 2 oz 8-packs
    • 2 oz 16-packs
  • A 4-pack of four 4 oz cups equals 16 oz and counts as one-half unit.

Cheese

Minimum quantity: 5 units

  • 1 unit equals one 16 oz package.
  • Must be pre-packaged in 16 oz packages only.
  • See the Food Guide for approved cheese types.

 

Only items authorized and listed in the current Michigan WIC Food Guide and published updates count toward the mandatory minimum stock requirements.

Vendors are strongly encouraged to stock as many varieties of WIC-approved foods as possible, including items not included in the minimum stock requirements.
